PROFILE OF THE INDIAN AUTOMOBILE INDUSTRY

The book released in January 2008 provides a complete profile of SIAM members which include 39 leading vehicle manufacturers and vehicular engine manufacturers.

It provides details on each of our member company - the official address & plant locations, names of the CEO, products manufactured, installed capacity, gross turnover, number of employees, production, domestic sales, exports, imports, R&D expenditure, collaborations details, quality certification for each company and others.

STATISTICAL PROFILE

The book provides comprehensive data on the Indian automobile industry. It gives valuable data on production, sales, exports, market share of manufacturers, state-wise registration, city wise registration, etc. giving the growth trends of the industry. Important data on the road transport sector is also available along with the historical customs and excise duty structure.

This would be a useful reference for drawing up production programmes, reviewing sales performance and also in evolving marketing strategies.

THE WTO REGIME AND ITS IMPLICATIONS FOR THE INDIAN AUTOMOBILE INDUSTRY

India is committed to WTO and its associated obligations. This has far reaching implications for trade and industry.

AIAM (now SIAM) commissioned a study to RIS. The study report makes a comparative analysis of the measures initiated in the different countries such as Brazil, China, Korea and Indonesia for safeguarding their interests in the automobile sector. The study also identifies the policy options open to India for safeguarding the interests of the national automobile sector and also remaining consistent with WTO obligations.

DEMAND PROJECTION FOR AUTOMOBILES AND AUTOMOTIVE TYRES IN INDIA (NCAER Study)

Automotive Industry in India is continuously being modernised to keep pace with international standards in terms aesthetics, ergonomics, fuel efficiency driving comfort, safety and emission norms.

ACMA, SIAM and TMA commissioned a Study to NCAER to estimate the demand for automobiles and automotive tyres for the period 2002-2003 to 2011-2012 at the domestic level as well as at the regional level.

COMPETITIVENESS OF THE INDIAN AUTOMOTIVE INDUSTRY

SIAM and ACMA appointed ICRA Advisory Services in October 2002 to evaluate the competitiveness of the Indian automobile industry in terms of input costs and to benchmark industry competitiveness with China. The Scope of the study included two wheelers, Cars/Multi Utility Vehicles (MUVs) and Commercial Vehicles (CVs). The study also covers recommended strategies and interventions at the industry level for enhancing the competitiveness of the Indian automobile Industry.

THE THAILAND & ASEAN INDIA FREE TRADE AGREEMENTS

India signed an FTA (Free Trade Agreement) with Thailand in October 2003. Under the FTA, 82 auto components covered under the Early Harvest Scheme will have zero custom duty when traded between India and Thailand by 31-3-2006; negotiations for tariff reduction/ elimination for other products will conclude by March 2005. The RTA (Regional Trade Agreement) between India and ASEAN is also in an advanced stage of discussion.

SIAM appointed ICRA Advisory Services in November 2003 to formulate a framework to evaluate FTA/RTAs and apply the framework on ASEAN to analyse the impact on the Indian auto industry. The scope of the study included two wheelers, Cars/Multi Utility Vehicles (MUVs) and Commercial Vehicles (CVs). For the purpose of this study, ASEAN included Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia, Philippines and Singapore.

The Study analyses the structure of the Indian and ASEAN auto industries. On the basis of a comparative exercise on performance of the Indian automobile and auto-component industry vis-à-vis that of ASEAN, the key drivers of competitiveness for Indian OEMs and auto component industry from the input side of the value chain were identified and evaluated. The study also recommends interventions for auto industry by Government and by the Industry.

CMVR NOTIFICATIONS & IMPORTANT GOVERNMENT CIRCULARS

INDIAN AUTOMOTIVE STANDARDS AND REGULATIONS

Standards for automobiles and automotive components are formulated by the Automotive Industry Standards Committee (AISC) under Ministry of Road Transport &Highways (MoRT&H) and the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS). Standards address safety and environmental imperatives.

This Booklet on Automotive Standards and Regulations released in November 2003 will serve as a reference for standards governing Active and Passive Safety and other requirements for automobiles.

REFERENCE BOOKLET ON WP.29

India is gradually harmonising its automotive standards with global norms, giving due cognizance to the prevailing national concerns. Union Cabinet in October 2002 approved a proposal to join the World Forum for Harmonisation of Vehicle Regulations (WP.29) as an Observer, initially.

The Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers, which is one of the members of the National Level Standing Committee on WP.29 has compiled this booklet containing some of the frequently asked questions on WP-29 and their possible answers. This compilation would be useful as a ready reckoner for those who are interested in knowing more about WP-29 and its relevance for the Indian automotive industry.
