SAFE – Society for Automotive Fitness
and Environment and SIAM (Society of Indian Automobile
Manufacturers) and in association with stake holders from Traffic Police,
Transport Department and NGOs will be organising a series of safety awareness
programmes across the nation starting 01 January 2010, during the National Road
Safety Week.
The road
safety week would be comprised of different
programme like seminars, exhibitions, training workshops, films and
road shows. These programmes would showcase the expertise of Indian Institutes /
Organisations working in the area of Road Safety. The programmes would
include the training of Delhi Traffic Police Wardens, DTC trainers,
Heavy Commercial Vehicle Drivers and the drivers of three
wheelers, and health check up camps for the drivers. One of the key objectives
of these safety programmes is to create awareness on issues related to Road Safety
amongst various stakeholders across 384 cities from 28
States and 3 union territories in India.
Commenting
on the initiative Mr. Dilip Chenoy, Director General of SIAM said “Today there is immense focus on technology development but limited
public mention about improving driver skills and safety strategies. Now this is
Time for Action; we are committed to enhancing Road Safety for minimizing
mishaps on roads”.
This programme has a variety of awareness training campaigns that will
be conducted by leading vehicle manufacturers like Maruti Suzuki India, Bajaj Auto, Eicher Motors, Volvo, M&M, Toyota, Ford India, Royal Enfield, Hero Honda Motors and Honda Motorcycle & Scooters
India across 384 cities in 28 states and 3 union territories in India.
National Road Safety Week is especially designed for the Traffic Police
Officers, DTC Bus Drivers, Three-Wheeler Drivers, Driving School Trainers,
School and College students, with the sole objective to reinforce them with the
overall knowledge on:
- Traffic
Problems
- Driving
in difficult conditions
- Coping
with diverse road user behavior
- Traffic
control devices – Road Signs & Markings
- Rules
of the road
- Qualities
of a good driver
- Fatigue
and stress management
- Difficult
and dangerous driving conditions – Weather, terrain, traffic &
visibility
- Defensive
driving techniques, including hazard perceptions
About SAFE: SAFE
(Society of Automotive Fitness & Environment) organizes Inspection clinics
for in-use vehicles and training workshops for pollution checking technicians in
various parts of the country. These programmes are aimed to create awareness on
the importance of regular maintenance amongst vehicle owners. It is one of the
most effective ways to control emission levels from vehicles in the country. In
addition SAFE organizes seminars
with State Government and other stakeholders.
SAFE has
also undertaken several initiatives on Road Safety education of students,
drivers, and the public at large. Through Road Safety Awareness Programmes, SAFE tries to apprise the community on
traffic rules and also inculcate correct and responsible attitude towards
fellow road users.
