SIAM organized a Roundtable on
Automotive Infotronics and ITS on 7th
January at NC Hanger, Pragati Maidan,
during the Auto Expo 2010.
Automotive Infotronics; best defined as a solution platform
– born from the convergence of wireless communication innovation, vehicle and
road electronics, IT and data systems, software applications and services – that
unlocks asset, personal, enterprise and societal value through both in-vehicle
as well as inter-vehicle applications. Intelligent Transport Systems is the
integration of Information & communication technologies with transport
infrastructure and users.
The Roundtable brought together the
representatives from government institution, academia, as well as industry
experts from IT, Electronics, Semi Conductors &
Automotive providing a platform to exchange ideas discuss strategies and
implementation plan.
During the roundtable two breakout sessions were
made to discuss the onboard transport vehicles systems & off board
transportation vehicles systems. Some of the priority areas identified in each
of the sessions were;
On board vehicle systems

Use
of common controller with open architecture in all ITS devices.

Use
of dedicated pathway for real time transfer of data & information so as to
attain reliability and accuracy of information.
Off Board vehicle systems
·
Deployment
of AVL (Automatic Vehicle Location) system across the major cities of the
countries.
·
Deployment
of advanced traffic management systems & intelligent parking systems, to
avoid the traffic jam issues.
·
Use
of shared pubic transport like auto rickshaw, taxis & vans.
It was also mentioned during the discussions that we need to
look at the standardization of these applications.
Mr Ambuj
Sharma, Joint Secretary, MOHI&PE speaking at the concluding session said
that we should clearly start implementing all the Automotive Infotronics &
ITS applications with in Pragati Maidan
during the next Auto Expo 2012. He also mentioned that his ministry would be
very keen to work with the group towards implementation of these identified
areas.
Dr
Aravind Bharadwaj, Chairman, SIAM Group on Automotive Infotronics & ITS and
CEO, Automotive Infotronics, concluded the roundtable by saying that at this
time several initiatives are under way with in India however most of these
programmes address partial element of a broader solution. SIAM would setup a core team including all
the stakeholders in this arena for the wider implementation and will take
active steps to underscore the importance of the automotive industry to India’s overall development.

representing 44 leading vehicle and vehicular engine manufacturers. It seeks to
promote sustainable development of the Indian automotive industry and plays a
catalytic role in fulfilling the vision of the Government of India to make India an Automotive Hub.
