General Motors India — the Indian arm of
General Motors US – on Tuesday said the firm’s new mini car will be called
‘Chevrolet Beat’. The Beat will cost Rs 4 lakh and will be manufactured at the
automaker’s Talegaon plant in Maharastra.
"The Beat is on schedule and is being
tested as of now. We will start production for sale on December 15 this year.
It will be first displayed at the 2010 Auto Expo in Delhi in January," the
president and MD of General Motors India, Mr Karl Slym said.
GM India also said that it will launch its
new Sedan—Chevrolet Cruz – in India on October 12. "The Cruz is being
rolled out for Diwali and will be priced between Rs 12 lakh and Rs 14
lakh," the president said.
To highlight the firm’s new partnership with
Bengaluru-based electric car company Reva, GM announced that from March next
year, Reva cars will be sold in around 25 Chevrolet dealerships in the country.
"We have around 200 dealerships and 25
of them will sell Reva cars. Depending on the demand for these electric cars,
the number may be increased later," he added.
The plug-in version of the Chevrolet
Spark—the firm’s electric venture with Reva – will be rolled out in the next 12
months and will be manufactured at GM’s Talegaon or Halol plant.
General Motors is also planning to give its
not-so-well selling Chevrolet Tavera a facelift next year to enhance its
position in the Indian market.
